All of a sudden…
I seem to have gotten a lot better at pronouncing words in non-English languages. This has coincided with a sudden intense perseveration on accents/dialects. It’s kind of cool but weird and is making me feel a little guilty, like when people would tell me as a kid “oh you say you can’t do the thing, but you can do it when you really WANT to!” I don’t think it’s volitional, though.
But it’s kind of bizarre nonetheless. Dialect-mimicking was apparently something I was excellent at as a toddler but I completely lost that ability around preschool age and have been BELOW average at it from then until this week. As a 30-something adult.
It’s probably developmental but, um, has anyone else experienced anything like this? I’ve lost skills and regained them before, but this one happened much faster than I am used to that ever happening.
I’m not sure if I have. Other than those two times that I got usable speech back – at great costs, once for a couple days, once for an hour, then gone again never to be seen.
The thing I wanted to say, though – is that one of the things that my totally-useless speech does and has done for the past several years, is mimic the same words in different accents and dialects, over and over and over and over and over again.
