It’s really kind of frightening, the fact that being diagnosed as having “high-functioning” autism and “low-functioning” autism is based upon the ability to talk or not.
I’m not even sure it’s always based on that.
I’ve looked into it, and it can be based on IQ, it can be based on speech, it can be based on obedience, all kinds of things.
I found a description of myself in my psych records as ‘low functioning’, at a time when I thought I was doing pretty well at the time – certainly I could speak most of the time. I’ll probably never fully know what they were thinking.
