Anonymous asked: If you're going to self diagnose don't just self diagnose come up with your diagnosis and then ask your doctor or psychiatrist they can determine if you are actually autistic or just an idiot if they know what to be looking for. Why would you determine yourself to be autistic without even asking your doctor? They do know more than you about the subject and they have diagnosed actual autistic people so dont assume someone who has been educated more than you has no idea what they are talking about

…okay, anon, ftr, i’m officially diagnosed. two different psychiatrists have confirmed that i’m on the autism spectrum. this is not something i hide in any way.

but self-diagnosis helped me find a group of like-minded people, which was extremely helpful to my overall mental health. i finally had a community that i felt like i could truly be a part of, diagnosed or not. some psychiatrists definitely know more than me, but my first official diagnosis was literally just a psychiatrist running through a checklist of ‘autistic traits’.

like, hell, i’m gonna guess that your experience with psychiatrists/other medical professionals has been more positive than mine (and again, i did get evaluated by another psychiatrist later, who had a much more thorough discussion with me and confirmed that i have asd), and that’s great!!! but it’s fucking ridiculous to suggest that i needed to ask my psychiatrist to determine whether i was “actually autistic or just an idiot”. like fuck u tbh.

on the bright side, this is the closest i’ve ever come to getting anon hate. so thanks! real ego boost!

I have to laugh, “ask your doctor or psychiatrist if they can determine if you are actually autistic or just an idiot”.

My autism diagnosis actually had the word idiot in it.  So I guess my psychiatrist determined that I was autistic and an idiot.  (Or rather, ‘idiot savant qualities’.)

Sorry to butt into a conversation, I just like to find things to laugh about when people are being ridiculous anyway, and with the way my initial diagnostic papers are written, that was actually funny.
