Time is Running Out: Act Now to Ratify the Disability Treaty!

andreashettle:

Did you know that opponents of international treaties defeated our December 2012 efforts for U.S. ratification of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities?  We needed a super-majority two-thirds vote of U.S. Senators to ratify—and missed by only 5 votes.  Please don’t allow them to win a second time in 2014!

Organizations who dislike any U.S. involvement with the UN are still using lies and misinformation to make people believe that the CRPD would somehow allow the United Nations to micromanage decisions that parents make about their own children or override U.S. sovereignty over its own domestic laws and policies.  Truth: No, it won’t.  But some people believe them enough to flood Senators with phone calls opposing the CRPD.

That means those of us who want for 1 billion people with disabilities around the world to experience their human rights need to create our own flood of phone calls to Senators supporting the CRPD!  Your calls still count even if you have called or emailed before.  Tools in the Action Center at the Disability Treaty website can help guide you through phone calls, emails, or other communication with Senators: http://disabilitytreaty.org  Sign up for the CRPD action alert!

The weather is not the only thing heating up this summer!  What’s also heating up is the campaign for U.S. ratification of the “Disability Treaty”—an important international treaty that upholds the civil rights of 1 billion people with disabilities around the world.  The U.S. is behind in joining the other 147 countries that have ratified the Disability Treaty (called Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, CRPD).  You can learn lots more about the CRPD and how to help at disabilitytreaty.org:

[Image description for people who cannot see it: A stark black and gray picture of the Capitol building in the background is overlaid with a black image of an hour glass.  Overlaid on the hourglass, toward the top of the image, a text box with red background and yellow text says in all capital letters, “Time is running out”.  Below this is a text circle with yellow background; in black text it says “Now is the time for the Senate to act!” In red text it says “Ratify the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities”.  At the bottom of the image, in yellow text on a black background, is the web link www.disabilitytreaty.org followed by an image of the blue Twitter bird logo with the yellow text hashtag, #CRPD]
