One thing high functioning can mean

• Career Advisors: Well, you're weird and I can't imagine anyone normal hiring you. You're bad at people and good at ideas. Why don't you go be an academic?
• Teachers: You're too smart to be having so much trouble with this. How do you ever expect to succeed in college if you can't even do high school homework?
• Professor in field A: You're struggling a lot. Don't you think you'd be better off in field B?
• Professor in field B: You're struggling a lot. Don't you think you'd be better off in field A?
• Disability office: We can't help you with that. College is for adults.
• Disability office: We can't help you with that either. It would be unfair.
• Professor: Are you sure academia is the right place for you?
• Career advisor: You're weird and I can't imagine anyone normal hiring you. You're bad at people and good at ideas. Why don't you go be an academic?
