You know what I don’t get? How my mother is deaf in one ear but she’s really ableist like ???
she tells me to get over my anxiety and she treats me like shit for not understanding social stuff b/c i’m on the autism spectrum? ?
i just don’t get how physically disabled people can be so ableist.
Generally, having one disability doesn’t give you any special understanding of having another type of disability, unless you actively try to gain that understanding. And the disability community has always had hierarchies of ableism within it.
I’ve also seen ableism toward someone with the same/similar disability as you, particularly in “I can deal with it so why can’t you” ways.
Yes I’ve seen that too.
In fact sometimes the hardest people for me to deal with are people who have the same disability as me, but just slightly slightly slightly milder difficulties in one particular area. Because then they’ll think that if I just pushed myself, I could do whatever they managed to do by pushing themselves.
