megachiropteran:

so… I wasn’t aware that it’s a bad idea to take NSAIDs if you have gastro issues, which I have had my whole life + my family has a history of various gastro diseases & cancers, but I’ve been on them for 5 years (at 2,000 mg a day!!!!) and just… no one has fucking mentioned…

Yeah, I am lucky enough to be able to handle ibuprofen if I’m careful about how much and what types of food I take it with. (My liver processes acetaminophen/paracetamol slowly, so I try to keep that to a minimum.) Every other NSAID I’ve tried caused really unpleasant GI effects pretty quickly. I can handle maybe one dose in a pinch, and sometimes that’s pushing it. I also have a history of assorted digestive problems from celiac and probably IBS too.

And, you know what? Literally ONE doctor ever has stopped trying to push NSAIDs at me when I said I had taken that before, and it really bothered my stomach. One. When they are well-known for causing dangerous bleeding and stuff. (And the pain wasn’t inflammatory to begin with so they didn’t even help much, but hey.)

Actually, I kind of wish I could see that doctor again. He was remarkably non-crappy and respectful acting in general.

Oh yeah that’s the other thing, my stomach is already bleeding.  I don’t need more bleeding.  It got injured when my tube pulled out last year and it’s never fully healed.  It doesn’t bleed so much as to be dangerous, but it still bleeds, and I still don’t need to make it any worse.  They’re still not sure why it isn’t healing – I still get blood coming out of the g-tube sometimes, or blood clots, sometimes big ones that block the tube.  Or things that look like chunks of stomach lining with blood attached.  Yes, my doctors know about this and are looking into it, but they say I’m already on every treatment they’d prescribe for a mild stomach bleed anyway so they’re not sure what more to do.
