some of the things some people say using functioning labels are important

like, don’t ignore people who need a lot of care and have little or no language

Yeah.  I don’t like functioning labels at all, but not every single use of them is something utterly horrible.  Most uses are pretty fucking horrible in one way or another, but not all.  And sometimes there’s no fast way to say something.  (Although I tend to go for something like “severely disabled” or “mildly disabled” or something like that, I don’t know why that’s easier for me to stomach but it is.)

Usually I think it’s better to be specific.

But also.. condition stuff aside. The social category exists.

And it’s important to give  damn what happens to people who get put in that category.

Yeah.  I tend to go for ‘people labeled low functioning’ (and that’s how I sometimes describe myself as well – then people say “sie’s calling hirself low-functioning” and it’s like no I’m not, I’m saying other people call me that, including in some official paperwork and crap, and severely autistic, and other such words, and that’s meaningful, because when you’re called those things, you get treated certain ways).
