Marginalized people are not revolution objects

realsocialskills:

So, here’s a thing I’ve seen happen:

  • People get really into social justice theory
  • and then they read a lot from people who all agree with each other
  • and then they assume that everyone in that group agrees
  • and then, when they encounter someone in that group who doesn’t think that thing, they…

It’s also really really important to remember that when people with chronic pain/fatigue/etc say we want to be cured or get better treatment, we’re not ‘betraying the movement’ or suffering from ‘internalised ableism’ or whatever.

I’ve been told both by people who were either able-bodied or didn’t have the same/similar conditions as me, and being told that by not wanting to live in pain or by wanting more mobility I’m betraying other disabled people is really not fun. At all. Please don’t do it.

I think that’s true no matter what condition you have. I think people with just about every condition have a full range of different opinions about cure.

People with disabilities disagree with one another about all kinds of important things, and *we get to do that*. And it’s important to acknowledge disagreement as disagreement, rather than insinuating that everyone who disagrees with me is brainwashed or something.

Yeah again when that person said that to me about “how does this fit into disability acceptance” when… if I didn’t take the treatment for adrenal insufficiency I was going to die.  Now I actually had accepted that, and was fine with that, if that’s how it was going to be.  But if it wasn’t how it was going to be, then no way in hell was I going to lay down and die for some kind of ideology.  I think I accept disability better than most people do, because I accept what my body is on a really basic disability-based level more than most people do.  I love my body all the way down through the molecules and whatever those molecules happen to be doing, good or bad.  But that doesn’t mean I won’t take treatments or cures in some cases.  And people who don’t understand that, can’t understand me, at all.  These are things that take place outside of words, outside of ideas, outside of ideologies, so they don’t fit neatly into a category that can be described in words or ideas or ideologies.  And that’s okay!  If you see a contradiction it’s because the words you would use to describe something contradict themselves, not because I’m contradicting myself.
