jugglingeese asked: Hi Ms Duane. I'm currently doing research for my dissertation, which is on the subject of the fantasy genre, and I thought I remembered you answering an ask once about the decision to not write out the 'magic words' in your novels, because if the reader says them out loud and nothing happens then the fictional world becomes less real. I've had a look around and I can't find it, and I was wondering if you might know where I might find it? Don't worry if not, I realise it was a while back. :)

dduane:

I think I found what you’re looking for. This post was the “prequel”, as it were —

I was wondering how you developed the Speech? What languages did you base it off of, how did you get the inspiration for it, etc.

And then this is the one you’re after:

The Speech: detail and lack of it, and the whys and wherefores

Hope this helps!

(attn @roane72: The Municipal Zeppelin Works are in the second one.) :)

You know, reading about that since we talked, I realize the problem isn’t even limited to sci-fi and fantasy! I think...
