Hufflepuffs usually have a much stronger personal tie to random belongings than most students. For example, most ‘puffs have a favorite quill or pen or pencil, and its loss would devastate them.

Many of us consider our inanimate belongings to be alive, and to be our family and friends, so it makes sense.  :-P
