(I was talking to my therapist about needing to get out of my parents’ house and she said, “You know, I’ve talked to a lot of autistic women who have done that by getting married.”

Like, it’s great if you genuinely want to and have a good partner, but it’s terrifying that it’s a strategy for getting the necessary independence/supports that may come at great cost.)

I get very scared of what will happen to Anne if she breaks up with Matt or something happens to him.  Not because she needs him on some kind of emotional level, but because I know that she would have a hard time replacing the assistance he gives her on a regular basis.  (She assists him, too, it’s not one-way, but the level of assistance she needs for pure survival is not negligible.  But she’d have a hard time accessing services.)
