The jellyfish-like invertebrate may be a common sighting for sailors in the Pacific Ocean, but the Velella velella (the species shares the same name as the genus) rarely washes ashore before the end of its lifespan. Just earlier, mostly? I remember a wave of them in central CA in 2003.

Ever heard of Velella velella, the marine life so nice they named it twice?

I thought there were yearly waves of these normally. Just earlier, mostly? I remember a wave of them in central CA in 2003.
