According to my brother, who was a chemistry major, it basically converts your sodium molecules to lithium molecules, and so going off it fast can be catastrophic. I remember when I was on it, I had all these precautions about not getting too dehydrated and things like that, and adults who knew anything about medicine were actually angry at any of my friends who didn’t treat me like I was extremely medically fragile. They didn’t treat me like this over any other drug I was on, and some of these adults were doctors. Like one time a kid took me home from walking around town on a hot day and I was kind of droopy, and his doctor father started screaming at him about being more careful with me, and then made up some concoction on the spot that he made me drink and sit down until I felt better. Lithium is great when it works for a person, but it’s got serious dangers and should be a last resort. I never should have been put on it (it was given to me because an antidepressant gave me manic-like symptoms, which should’ve been really bleeding obvious what the cause was, but it was like the old lady who swallowed the fly back then with my meds).
