This is so calming for me I wanna stare at this forever hnnnng.
I actually have sections and organize my books by topic. For example, all of my computer and design books live in their own space adjacent to my computer. Fiction gets its own section in my main bookshelves. School reference and old textbooks make up about 3 shelves (I don’t keep ALL old textbooks, but I do keep them if it’s a subject I’m likely to continue my studies in, or will need to refresh in, so I have a lot of old health, science, and math books). My self-help stuff all goes in one space, philosophy/religion in its own space, LGBTQ books in their own space, art books in their own space. And there’s a “miscellaneous” section where I don’t have enough of that type of book to give that subject its own topic.
Most of my books, except for tech/computer books and some school related books, are 5+ years old, because I don’t buy paper-books very often anymore (mostly an e-book girl these days), and have pared my collection down by *a lot*.
The first four really freak me out. Like, you have no idea how much those freak me out.
Alphabetically is the most calming for me. Chronologically makes me twitch.
Our books are currently just “on the shelf” because organizing books takes time. What I want to do is have all my writing and crafting books in my sewing room, and all of my husband’s computer books in his study, and then have everything else in the living room organized according to the… what is it… the Library of Congress? Not the Dewey Decimal system, the one they use in academic libraries. Because I think that will be spiffy.
