Smiling Young White People Make App for Avoiding Black Neighborhoods

amaditalks:

Some people are noting that there is no way that this app won’t be loaded with information based on some racist, classist crap.

But.

The information in the app is going to be crowdsourced, based on info provided by app users.

Therefore, I think we should all download it. Especially trans folk, queer folk, and POC. Because we all know that the places that smiling Susie and Jimmy Creamcheese who made this app would consider awesome and not sketch at all are often the places where we are treated the worst.

Let’s load this thing with our experiences of neighborhoods and locations. Let’s flip the script. Let’s show that “sketchy” is entirely experiential, and that the middle class, white, cishet experience isn’t universal and doesn’t carry more weight than anyone else’s.

That doing so will ruin the intention of the app is… Well let’s just call it a side benefit.
