This, right here, is why it’s so important to never shy away from helping someone. Today on my way home from work I was talking on the phone to my mom at the bus stop about how I’m broke, about to be homeless, and heartbroken in my used-to-be university city. A young woman overheard and while we were on the bus she wrote this:

“Dunno if this helps at all, but, this is what I’ve learned about living off of $14k in this town-

-Trillium drug benefit. They make you pay 4% of your income, but will cover drug costs above that # (Ontario gov’t) —> covers me for PCOS + asthma + migraines, was a PAIN to set up though.

-The Working Centre on Queen St in Kitchener will help you with tax returns and help you find a ton of little things - bus pass for $20/mth, etc. —> Also, Queen St Common Cafe is a great space to work, coffee is $0.85 and a full healthy meal $5. You can stay all day, too, using their wifi.

-The YMCA has memberships geared to income. I currently pay $7.50/mth.

-The market at closing time occasionally has good deals (though not always), and Value Mart uptown’s best selection of 50% off items is in the morning.

-The library. It’s free, it’s humanizing, they have movies and TV shows and free access to wifi/computers/consumer reports/magazines. (Plus: Harper Branch of WPL is hiring a shelver right now for $11/hr, 11 hrs a week. Set schedule, can lead to library assistant positions and decent pay, but still LOW hours.) WPL, KPL and Cambridge are all pretty awesome.

GOOD LUCK!! I’ve been poor in Toronto, London (UK), and here and here is BY FAR the hardest!!”

This seriously saved me today from a dark pit of complete despair. Whoever this woman is, I wish only amazing things for her.
