It occurred to me recently that I’ve been a bit sparing with the old ‘Hammer for Scale’ pictures lately. So it’s time to rectify this with a picture and description of a rock with a hammer for scale!
This is an amphibolite pod within the granitic basement from North Roe in Mainland Shetland.
This unit is correlated with the Lewisian Gneisses of Mainland Scotland, so this amphibolite could arguably be thought of as part of the Scourie Dyke complexes in the Hebridean Terrane.
Luckily this sample has lots of garnets for dating, so I should be able find out whether it is indeed reasonable to make this correlation. Should be interesting to find out, and I’ll let you know if/when I find out the answer!
