Will Belleville face a lawsuit in the group home case?

A small group home for adults with disabilities is trying to buy a house in a neighborhood governed by an HOA (homeowner’s association). The HOA tried to restrict them from buying a house. But they will lose, because the Fair Housing Act prevents against this very thing - HOAs trying to keep neighborhoods free from people who are different from them in anyway.

What a bleak world they must inhabit.

I think this also says something about how we treat people with disabilities, though.

A group home *is* a business. It’s not a home like the other homes in the neighborhood. It’s not people with disabilities just living in a house and having support. It’s someone running a business and housing people with disabilities inside it.

It doesn’t have to be that way. It shouldn’t be that way.

People with disabilities should live in their own homes, not someone else’s businesses.
