I’m scared to set up an appointment with the Adult Autism Center. I know one autistic woman with a high opinion of them. But I’m terrified of what misconceptions they might have. Of whether they’ll think I even deserve to be in my field.
But on the other hand, I really want to see what I can do with regard to medication management of motor skills and executive function. I might be able to get the latter with an ADHD specialist, but I think things are getting to the point where most autism specialists at least acknowledge these are issues? I want to find someone who might know why lorazepam helps me so much, but who might be able to find something else that does similar things and is better as a long term med.
Lorazepam helps people with autistic catatonia. It’s not known why. Be aware of that. It helps me a good deal. It’s one of the few meds known to do anything for autistic catatonia, which is a good thing because pretty much the only other ‘medical’ treatment they recommend for it is ECT (including involuntary ECT) which is horrible and does not help most people with autistic catatonia.
(In fact, I know someone with autistic catatonia who nearly died because of ECT, and then lost her memory of most of her life. Another person with autistic catatonia described waking up from it as the worst pain she ever felt. Unfortunately Dirk Dhoscche is interested in autistic catatonia only because it helps him promote his agenda of getting ECT back on the map, the same way he is interested in severe depression and a few other things that ECT is still sometimes recommended for. He is not interested in it for innocent research reasons and he makes my blood boil, especially after talking to him about the matter – he patronized me and Donna Williams equally.)
Anyway, if you have anything resembling autistic catatonia. Even if it doesn’t meet the more stringent criteria for autistic catatonia. Then there’s a chance that’s why lorazepam helps with those things so much. Because lorazepam does help autistic catatonia a good deal. My parents noticed lorazepam helping me since the first time I was given it at the age of fifteen, but back then we had no autistic catatonia diagnosis, even the term autistic catatonia didn’t exist yet.
So be aware of that.
