The Adult Autism Clinic is apparently unwilling or unable to send instructions through email, as I requested when I filled out the online form.

Also, they want me to send records.

My psych history is scattered between so many different people, and each one probably doesn’t have records from the others. I figure the records from my last psychiatrist are probably good to send. I might just fax them my ADOS writeup myself, if I can figure out how to fax things. Maybe I should try to get records from the therapist I was seeing then too. Should I attempt to acquire the records from the people who first diagnosed me with Asperger’s at 13? I don’t know. I think my autistic disorder diagnosis from age 17 should be acceptable, but maybe I’ll look more credible if I have a diagnosis from when I was younger.

Just don’t send them anything with information you don’t want them using.  That sounds obvious, but isn’t always.

My ADOS writeup is full of crap about how I have no insight.

But it’s the best thing I have for substantiating that I’m autistic. I’m worried about trying to get re-diagnosed now that I’m a grad student and in a long-term relationship. It seems like both those things would make me less likely to be diagnosed.

Yeah – sometimes you have to let them see things you’d rather them not believe about you, because it’s the only way to get things done.  But just be sure you know what you’re doing.  The ADOS one is probably your best bet anyway, because it’s supposedly the gold standard diagnostic thing.  I just meant… like if something has seriously private information that you don’t want being spread around, think about it first.  Because once it’s spread, it can’t be unspread.  But sometimes it’s worth it.  It all depends.

I had to give Social Security and the Regional Center some documentation that I was not happy having to give anyone (because it contained misdiagnoses as well as diagnoses), but it worked out okay.  Things like that.
