becausebirds:

We saw the Three Caballeros parrots! Thanks to your tips I visited the Green-Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn and got to watch the adorable Monk Parakeet.

These parrots are similar to the wild parrots living in LA. They started as pets, escaped, and established themselves in the city.

Quaker Parrots!  Those are wonderful.  There’s a huge colony in Brooklyn.  They build nests that are like enormous condominiums.  Each one has several rooms.  One for the nesting parents and the babies, one for the older birds, a front porch for visitors, and for older birds who have left the nest and need to come back for some reason.   (For instance if they got divorced they’ll come back and couch-surf with their parents until they find another home.  Totally serious.)  Their nests can weigh as much as two tons.  They are amazing, amazing birds and my friend has one for a pet.  They understand English very well if talked to like regular people instead of “polly want a cracker”, and they can learn to speak, it’s just hard to hear them because their voices are indistinct, but they use words plenty appropriately once you get used to interpreting their “Quaker accents”.  I love these birbs.
