I wonder if Tobias became a hawk not just to escape the life he already had, but the life he foresaw happening for him. Like maybe he wouldn’t have been able to make it in the human world, maybe as soon as he turned 18 his uncle and aunt would have kicked him onto the streets, and he would have ended up homeless anyway. At least as a hawk he’d have freedom, and he’d be safer than he’d have been as a homeless youth.
That makes a lot of sense. I hadn’t thought of that before. And being a hawk gives him all kinds of survival skills, even if he’s too grossed out to use them at first.
