Honestly the fact that someone might forget what you to do them has historically been used to justify all kinds of abuse, including molestation of children (I swear to god I once read a letter from a woman in a women’s magazine saying molesting children didn’t matter because they wouldn’t remember when they grew up)

I know someone who was raped in a mental institution and when they called a rape crisis hotline they were basically told “Those people were taking care of you” and “How were they to know you’d understand?”  I was sexually assaulted in a mental institution in front of an entire room full of people, both inmates and staff, but because I was catatonic at the time nobody stopped him.  Later someone told me what had happened, as if I hadn’t noticed.  The boy never got in trouble.  When I told one of his teachers (he turned out to have gone to the same special ed school I later went to), she actually laughed and said “Yep, that’s Roger alright” (if Roger was his name), and the other teachers joined in, laughing reminiscently as if laughing about some funny trait someone had (which happened to be sticking his toes up people’s butts and wiggling them).  Nowhere did I get any kind of sympathy and nowhere did he get any kind of punishment, nothing.  And I was presumed not to remember any of it anyway, or not to understand, so when I did tell…

(This same teacher is the one who got furious with me for identifying with the girl who drooled on her desk while on the same med that made me drool on my desk.  This is what I mean by “Every time I managed to communicate something real, they’d undermine it somehow…”  Every time.)
