BCBAs make my skin crawl.

When they say “evidence based” what they mean is “I’m right because SCIENCE” and “I know how to manipulate someone into doing things that make my theory look correct”

Yes.

I had reason to be reading through a lot of the literature a few days ago.

And it’s true that behaviorists have figured out how to make people do things. What they haven’t shown is that they *should* be doing that. Sure, there’s an official code of ethics, but it’s based on some utterly abhorrent assumptions.

Some of the papers were talking about how they had successfully gotten people to stop doing certain stims. And talking about how after they had learned, the people would occasionally start the movement involved in that stim, and then freeze and put their hands down. This was a sign of success.

I didn’t get ABA. But I have that response when I notice I’m stimming in certain ways in public, or when I realize somebody else has noticed. The internal sensation that accompanies it is horrible. I wouldn’t wish it on anyone. I don’t know that it’s what the people talked about in those papers were experiencing. But I wouldn’t be surprised at all.

Of course, ABA involves not acknowledging that autistic people *have* internal experiences, so…

I do think that *some* things developed by behaviorists have *some* legitimate applications.

Unfortunately, the culture of behaviorism is evil.
