I have so many Feelings about this… the entire novel, the elves’ strength is in making others feel weak, making them feel like they’re nothing, less than nothing. It affects everyone, Shawn, even Magrat, even Nanny. Granny sweats with effort trying to keep the Queen out of Diamanda’s head. And then Granny stands there and tells the Queen she’s better than her, and that it isn’t hard. Something an elf has probably never, ever heard before. Granny, who takes the right and the duty to judge others. Granny, who looks after the weak and takes care of her silly people and screams at young girls that they don’t want to be witches, not if they knew what it really means. Granny, who is better than the Queen with every fiber of her being, who makes sacrifices and takes responsibility, who always tries to face toward the light, even though she was born to be the Bad Witch. Who hurls the most perfectly cutting insult at the Queen that anyone could ever utter. Who stands up for humanity. Who cares for the weak and small. Who shoes the unicorn.

This, right here, this is the epitome of Granny.
