and the mestizo colombian midlife immigrant with every language disability in the book, who gets accused of not wanting to learn english when it took him 20+ years to speak spanish fluently, and at great personal effort/expense became functionally bilingual, only to have people treat him like a creeper just because he’s a “scary” ( =brown) guy and visibly neurologically different, and treat him like he doesn’t understand english just because a lot of ignorant people who’ve never met any foreigners don’t understand when he talks.
