i really wish “i forgot” could be treated as a legitimate excuse. for a lot of disabled people, it isn’t a testament of being uncaring or lazy - it’s a genuine expression of remorse.

Every so often it feels like my memory does a reset. I don’t know if it’s based on a certain amount of time passing, or if it’s related to stress, but it scares me. I forget a lot of emotionally relevant details about my friends, for instance. I don’t remember things we’ve done together or how I used to feel about them or, in a sense, who they are. I do remember, and I don’t. It’s hard to explain.

I actually didn’t realize how often this theme of forgetting shows up in my poems. I actually wondered why I wrote about ‘I can’t remember your face’ when that had never happened to me? And then a couple days ago it hit me- yes it does. 

Not forgetting faces, precisely, but having several months’ worth of emotion-based memories about people I spend time with suddenly just crashing, or getting covered in a fog. It makes me so, so sad. And suddenly it makes sense how, as a kid, I would write these ridiculously long journal entries because I was so fucking scared of forgetting. And how I would keep EVERYTHING so that I would have reminders.

My memory does a thing after especially brain-intensive events.

Like if I go to the emergency room one day, then everything resets, and the entire world began in the emergency room as far as my memory is concerned.  It usually takes weeks before I begin to remember the things that happened before that day.

And then some other major event happens and wipes my prior memories clean again.

The memories always come back, mind you.  It’s just that they get wiped out completely, it seems, every time a big enough event happens.
