It bothers me that so many people think “socially awkward” means the same thing as “jerk” or that socially awkward people act socially awkward on purpose just to piss non-socially awkward people off. Too many people act like being ignorant of social skills is the same thing as behaving offensively on purpose. Like, if someone is doing something on purpose in order to offend someone, then they actually understand what they’re doing, which means that — in that area at least — they actually *have* social skills, they’re just choosing not to use them. As someone who constantly struggles in social situations and who lives in constant fear of saying or doing the wrong thing, who has to analyze everything I’m about to say for its potential to upset someone, and who isn’t sure if I *did* upset someone or not because I have trouble reading facial expressions and tone of voice, the fact that people lump being socially awkward together with being a deliberate asshole just turns my anxiety up even higher than it already is.

Yes yes yes this.  All of this.
