melancholicmarionette asked: The problem with people who are against self-diagnosis who just say "just go get a formal diagnosis!" is that they're not just ableist they're classist too. I was 8 when I was diagnosed so I don't remember exactly how much it cost but it's not cheap, and not only that but I DO remember it being extremely time consuming (three hours a day for like two days, I think). Do people who just say "go get a formal diagnosis" realize that not everyone can afford it or drop 1 or 2 work/school days for it?

1 or 2 days?  Wow.  When I was diagnosed, it took… weeks, a month maybe, before it was formalized in any way.  But then I wasn’t seeking an autism diagnosis, so that may be what made the difference.  I was in a mental institution for suicidal behavior and they just happened to notice I was probably autistic, and then did a bunch of interviewing and testing and observation over a long period of time.

I think it’s interesting though how many different ways there are to get diagnosed.
