I’m making a follow-up statement to a post I wrote about people starting to say depression is not a real mental illness:
DON’T use that as an excuse to ignore other people’s experiences with mental illness. The idea that “having depression doesn’t make me privileged over people with psychotic disorders” does not lead to the conclusion “so I can make broad generalizations about other people’s experiences, ignore them, undermine their authority over their own lives, and tell them to ‘go get help.’”
This shit only works if people are willing to listen to each other, and using privilege or lack thereof to dismiss other people’s experiences is completely abusing the concept.
