This is something everyone should see always my goal.  Laura Tisoncik was the person she needed when she was younger, towards me.  Explicitly, she made that very clear.  That’s how she became my ‘second mother’.  She knew that my parents didn’t understand how to navigate the disability system, or how to get me out of the mess my head was in after institutions, and she took it upon herself to do most of that work for them, or to help them heavily with that work.  Because they wanted to help me but didn’t know how.  And she saw me as much like her when she was younger, and wanted to spare me the hell she went through. I’m not sure I’ll ever be able to take on that mentoring role with someone younger (but you never know), but I try very hard to let younger disabled people know things that I didn’t know as a child, things that would have kept me from multiple suicide attempts.  I may not be able to be this for one person, but I can do things that affect lots of children, I hope.
