But another is because you want to learn what someone else thinks. And you know that someone else put a lot of effort into creating the book and every part of it exists for a reason. Those books don't have to keep me interested with conflict because they're already keeping me interested with the author.

Yeah I agree.  I think tension is useful for certain kinds of books, and totally useless for others.  It all depends on what the author is trying to accomplish.
